Where to Start

First things first. You’re going to need a few things first before I get into how you make e-liquid. Do this the right way you’ll need the right equipment. You’re not going to need a fully stocked lab or anything just some things that will make this go easier for you and safer. Here is a list of things that I use to make my e-liquid. Then I’ll explain each one and why I use them.

  • a scale
  •  Glass-Erlenmeyer-Flask-Set
  • 3ml syringe, 9ml,12ml, 20ml,100ml
  • Flavor concentrates
  • Amber 1oz Boston Round Glass Bottles with Child Resistant Droppers 30ml
  • 16 once crock pot
  • Vegetable Glycerin
  • Propylene Glycol
  • nicotine

There are some great places where you can get recipes from. My favorite is All The Flavors.com. They have an app for your phone which I love. I use it all the time when I’m mixing. You can find all kinds of videos on mixing e-juice on YouTube as well.  And of course, you can Google it.

AWS Digital Scale

I use an AWS Digital scale because it’s a lot more accurate when mixing. I found that this is the gold standard in a scales for the home mixer. You can mix your e-liquid by the drop or by ml by using syringes or by % and most places where you find recipes will have it by either of these ways. Weighing it is the best.

It’s much more accurate and will give you a better end product that accurate to its flavor. If you are going to buy a scale here is a tip while using your AWS scale. When measuring for your e-liquid make sure you don’t have a ceiling fan or window fan on, this will affect the readout.

  Glass-Erlenmeyer-Flask-Set

These glass Flasks make it much easier to mix in and stir without getting your juice all over the place. It’s cleaner and much easier to drop your concentrates in while measuring.

Once you have completed the measuring or adding all your ingredients you need to steer it until it becomes a milky white consistency. This is from all the air that has mixed in together. This will take a while. You can transfer your mix Into a glass dropper bottle. This way you can really shake it up.  You need to shake it so it mixes and binds together.

16 oz crock pot

Using a crock pot to heat up you e-liquid to steep it is one of the best ways to steep your e-liquid faster than steeping it the regular way. And that’s just time. You’ll want to put water in your crock pot and either put your flask with your mix in it in the crock pot or you can put your mix in a glass dropper bottle.

Depending on what you used in your mix, the steep time can very. Some can take up to a month to steep. It takes time for the concentrates to blend and bond together. But by using a crock pot and putting water in it the let your e-liquid in the flask before shaking it until it comes to a milky white. It turns this color from all the air bubbles.

Then set in the crock pot of water for about 15 minutes or so then shake it some more. You’ll see that the e-liquid has thinned out. It’s mostly oil so you can expect it to thin out under heat.

Depending on what you used in your mix, the steep time can very. Some can take up to a month to steep. It takes time for the concentrates to blend and bond together. But by using a crock pot and heating you mix for 15 to 20 minutes it speeds up the process. You can vape your mix right after you take it out of the crock pot.

You can vape your mix right after you take it out of the crock pot. Name your recipe and date it. Then put it in a dark cool place. I use a large cigar humidor. If you are going to use a cigar humidor don’t put it in the sunlight. Keep it away from the window and any A/C duck.

Magnetic Stirrer

This isn’t on the list but it is a great investment. It is the best way to steep your e-liquid. It works by adding a small plastic covered magnet in your flask with your e-liquid and the little magnet spins and stirs your e-liquid. You can adjust the speed on how fast you want it to stir. And it has a hot plate to heat your e-liquid at the same time.

I found this on Amazon for $134.95. They have it on sale right now for $120.00 I’ve seen the same on eBay for much more.

Amber Glass Bottles with Child Resistant Droppers 30ml

Once you have made your e-liquid you can put it in this 30 ml dropper bottles. I like glass because it keeps your e-liquid fresh and the Amber color glass keeps the UV rays from spoiling the e-liquid. And you can still see when you’re filling the bottle up unlike if you used a black bottle. You can buy 200 ml plastic bottles to store your favorite e- juice in. Just make sure you get a small pour spout cap for them.

Flavor concentrates

There a bunch of different manufacturers that make concentrates. Here are the main ones:

  1. Flavorah
  2. Capella
  3. Flavors Express
  4. Flavor West
  5. FlavourArt
  6. Jungle Flavors
  7. Medicine Flower
  8. LorAnn
  9. NorthWest
  10. The Flavor Apprentice

There all good, you need to figure out for yourself which one you like best in the mix your doing. You’ll find This is a good start.

Flavor concentrates are the same that you use to bake a cake.

Vegetable Glycerin

Vegetable Glycerin is one of the main ingrediency’s in you e-liquid. This is what produces the smoke or the clouds in your e-liquid. It’s mostly just a filler.

Propylene Glycol

Propylene Glycol is what make the flavors bind together. You’ll find propylene glycol in inhalers. Your body can only absorb 45% of it and the rest discarded out through sweet and waste. The amount you would to digest to become harmful to you in vaping would be impossible. It’s virtually harmless.

Nicotine

This is the stuff that has every vapor activist out there slamming vaping. This is a dangerous chemical and needs to be handled very carefully. It must be stored away from children and pets. It must be handled wearing gloves and eye protection.

If you get a generous amount on your skin and you don’t wash it off in a timely manner it could kill you. Personally, I don’t believe you need more than 12mg in your e-liquid. If you do need more than this then talk to your doctor about this before you start making e-liquid for yourself.

There I got all the scary stuff out of the way. If you use this properly and responsibly you won’t have a problem. I buy the 250 ml and put some in a 15 ml drop bottle put it in the refrigerator. I store my 250 ml bottle in the freezer.

If you have children then sit them down and talk to them about nicotine. I wouldn’t just try to mask it and hid it in the freezer. They WILL find it. So talk to then about the dangers of this product. No different than you would about a gun.

I was a 2- 2 1/2 pack a day smoker and I started out with 6mg in my e-liquid. It was more than enough. I’m at 3 now and could with no problem cut it out completely at this point.

Rounding things up

You want to find a recipe that you want to make. Then you want the concentrates you need to make your recipe. Now start mixing. Add you concentrate into your flasks or beacons that are on your scale. (If your not using a scale and are mixing with the drop method then add your mix right into the dropper bottle your going to use)

Once your recipe is done and in your bottle, you need to shake it up really good. To the point that your mix is filled with little air bubbles. At this point, you need to let your recipe to steep for a few days or weeks depending on your recipe.

To speed up the steeping process you can heat up your recipe using constant warm water or heat. Using a little crock pot or you can get some white rice put it in a container and set your microwave for 15 seconds and heat up the rice.

Once the rice is heated up you can bury your e-juice in it. This is a great and effective way to heat your e-juice for steeping.

The best way for this process I’ve found is using a magnetic stirrer. you have excellent control of your heat and mixing all at the same time.

  1. Personally, I don’t smoke or vape but I was curious about this article. I have seen an increase in stores here in NZ, selling vaping devices and liquids etc. I didn’t realise people could make their own at home, but in this day and age I suppose I should have known that it was possible.
What are your thoughts on the cost effectiveness of making it at home as opposed to purchasing the liquid already made?

    1. Joanne, thank you for your question. Well your not going to beleave it, If you buy a 15ml bottle of e-liquid from a shop you’ll spend anywhere from $8-$10 for it. When I make it my self the same size bottle it coats me .21 cents. There’s a huge savings. Plus you know whats going in it.

The flavoring is just flavor concentrate, it’s the thing you you use to bake cakes with. And the bulk of it is vegetable oil.

  2. I never even thought about a ‘do-it-yourself’ process to make the e-liquid for vaping. I’m not sure if I’m there yet as far as being ready to make my own e-liquid. But you never know, I might get to a point where I buy all of the supplies. Thanks for the instructions and information on how to do this, I hope others take it into consideration.

    1. No problem Jeremy,

It’s really easy and you need to buy everything I mentioned in this articular. This is just what I use to make it for myself and friends. You can mix it by the the drop. There are plenty of people that do it this way and most places you find recipes online chart it out in there recipe so you can mix by the drop.

If your not planing to quit vaping you might want to consider mix it your self. The cost difference if incredible! And it’s a lot of fun making it. You feel like a mad scientist!

If you choose to mix your self and you have any question let me know and I’ll anyway I can.

      Respectfully,

      Darin

  3. Hi there,
Thanks for posting such a great and interesting review.
Looking back again at this tutorial, I see that there are a lot of ingredients that go into producing this vaping liquid.
I cannot see how cost effective this exercise would be versus buying a small bottle in the shops.
Before you even purchase all the ingredients, there are a lot of extras, like scales and glass bottles and the magnetic stirrers etc etc.
I fail to see the benefit of this exercise.
Well done again on a great article
    Best wishes
    Cheers………Phil Browne

    1. Thanks Phil for your response,

But I have to say the cost difference is huge! Yes there is a larger up front cost. And what I posted here is just what I do and use. You can just get the concentrates, VG and PG and call it a day. You can make your recipes by the drop. And you can buy all of that for under $50.

You can pay $10 for 15 ml of e-liquid and by making it your self that same about will cost you .21 cents and even less if you buy a larger amount of concentrates. This is based on buying 10 ml of concentrates. Most people go through 15ml in less than a week. You will have your money back in a month. And that 10 ml of concentrate can last you a year.

Now can see the differance and the cost affectiveness in making it your self?

  4. Hi Odam65 I have just checked your website out. I don’t smoke myself. But work with 2 men who make there own liquid ! Here in the UK the laws changing. something about not been able to sell big bottles of liquid anymore ?
back to your site it’s very informative, even to someone who doesn’t use one ! and with them becoming very popular. I think your onto a winner ?
like the use of picture and bullet points for what you will need.
good luck and I hope your dreams come true
    Paul

    1. Thank you Paul, Are they changing it to where you can not make it yourself in the UK? The laws are changing everywhere. Of course because it’s something that is proven works safely. They want to make sure they get cut.
